X-Rite’s new i1Photo Pro 2 is the complete solution for photographers using RGB workflow with their inkjet printers. If you use your printer’s driver or use a RIP that speaks RGB then this new all in one solution is right for you. So let’s begin at the beginning with your color management workflow at capture.
There are two components in the i1Photo Pro 2 that assist you with your camera captures. First there is the mini ColorChecker Classic. This small version of the full sized ColorChecker classic gives you the most trusted color standard for white or neutral balancing and to act as a visual reference. The ColorChecker Classic is arguably the most photographed item in the world. Photographers the world over have been shooting it for over 40 years to give labs, designers, and printers a standard to work toward. Digital captures in RAW format allows us to do our neutral or white balance in post production and use the ColorChecker as a visual reference to adjust the file that contains the ColorChecker and then apply both the white balance and the changes to all the other files in our shoot.
But this ColorChecker comes with another addition to give you an additional level of color perfection in your capture workflow. Camera Calbration Software turns your ColorChecker Classic into a device that allows you to make custom DNG camera profiles in any light. A lot of people ask me “why do I need a custom profile for my camera?” Well the answer is very simple. The digital sensors in our DSLR cameras are not consistent from on camera to the next. Each digital sensor is slightly different from every other digital sensor. That means that your color reproduction from one camera to another can have color differences. This usually shows up as an over saturation in some colors versus the sensor in another camera. But even if you shoot with only one camera body creating custom DNG profiles can save you hours of post production work and streamline your digital workflow so that you can actually enjoy photography again without being chained to a computer doing color corrections on your RAW captures.
The new i1Photo Pro 2 also includes the brand new i1Pro 2 spectrophotometer. This new device with its elegant and efficiently designed accessories is the new standard in color perfection for digital photographers. The new mechanical interface on the back of the device allows accessories like the monitor calibration holder, the beamer holder (for profiling digital projectors), and the spot color attachment to quickly and easily snap on and off. Optical brighteners are common in ink jet photo papers so having this option is a giant leap forward for critical color reproduction. Advanced features allow you to save and share workflows, create custom patch sets, and perform QA and uniformity checks on your monitor. Pantone Color Manager is included to assist you with using the Pantone color libraries for color matching and standardization.
