To ColorMunki Photo or ColorMunki Display? That is the Question!
by Brenda K. Hipsher – November 27th, 2012
We recently ran across a review of ColorMunki Photo from way back in January 2011. Trey Ratcliff talkes about monitor calibration on his blog called Stuck in Customs. Trey talks about the fact that our eyes tend to try to “auto-calibrate colors in a scene.” While this may clean up some of the momentary discomfort that we feel when we look at an image that is not shown in correct color. There are two things that our “auto-calibrate” system cannot repair.
First, just because our brain tries to “correct” the color when it is not correct it doesn’t change the way we feel about the image. When color in an image is off we feel differently about the image. Maybe it doesn’t register in our heads,”WOW that is way too red” (or yellow or blue or green or or or….) yet we’re left with a sense that the image we photographed and what we’re seeing now just doesn’t produce the same emotion that we experienced when we captured the image.
In addition, having an uncalibrated monitor can be a source of great frustration and not a little bit of money wasted especially when you’re throwing away prints made using a monitor that is not calibrated. Most industry analysts estimate that you throw away $4.00 for every 8×10 print that goes in the trash. That is a LOT of paper and ink going into a landfill.
ColorMunki Photo is great if you’re printing at home AND you want to make your own custom profiles. But many of us do not print at home or if we do we use the profiles made available by every major printer manufacturer. What we really need is a device that will calibrate and profile our monitor so we know that what we see on our monitor is really what colors are in the file. If our monitor is calibrated and profiled then the files we prepare for printing look as good on the print as they do on our monitor.
Since this article was written the new ColorMunki Display has been introduced. This completely redesigned colorimeter calibrates and profiles your monitors and profiles your digital projector so you look good whether you’re printing or presenting your work to others. ColorMunki Display is an advance level solution that gives you professional results when preparing files for printing.
