Water and Sunset | One year photo journey around the world
by Clizia Capecchi
English Coloratti Kimberley Coole was included as a finalist in “The Travel Photographer of the Year award”, a photography contest by photographers for photographers. It’s open to photographers from all countries and is judged by leading photography experts. The best images are featured in the beautiful TPOTY ‘Journey’ portfolio books as well as their exhibitions at the Royal Geographical Society.
Kim entered the One Shot category and received a “Commended” listing. The category was based on the theme of water this year. The image she decided to enter was a shot from her recent trip to Sri Lanka in April 2012. The brief for the category is show below:
“Water makes up over two thirds of this planet’s surface area and is vital to sustain life, determining where we build our towns and cities. As oceans, glaciers, ice, snow, rain and steam, water shapes and creates the natural world, sculpting some of the Earth’s most challenging terrain and creating playgrounds for skiers, swimmers, sailors, divers and adventurers. And, of course, it is an essential part of our daily lives. Show the judges a single image which says “water” in one of its many forms.”
The photograph shown below and is one of Kim’s favorites from a recent trip to Sydney; this particular shot was taken using her beloved LEE Big Stopper filter at sunset which resulted in an extremely long exposure of 120 seconds!
This particular image was up for the “Best Single Image in a Portfolio” award in the Journeys category.
Excerpts from an interview by Clizia with Kim-
CC: What does the (near) future hold for the photo industry, in your opinion? Do you think color management will be more or less important – why?
KC: I believe color management will remain as important as it always has been, clients will still require color perfect images and photographers will endeavor to produce them. Whether the images are displayed digitally or printed, consistency between the two will be essential and thankfully X-Rite has a comprehensive range of products to ensure photographers worldwide are kept happy!
CC: How is color management related to your artistic process?
KC: For those readers familiar with my work it is quite clear that color is one of the most important aspects to my images. Many of my photographs were taken due to the colors within the scene at the time, and so keeping these strong and vivid colors is my main focus during the adjustment stage, making color management essential to my artistic process.
