December Photo Contest Theme “Celebrating Family” | X-Rite Color Perfectionists Unite!

December Photo Contest Theme “Celebrating Family” | X-Rite Color Perfectionists Unite!

Today begins our final monthly theme contest in the Color Perfectionists Unite! series.  Our December theme is “Celebrating Family.”  Now don’t take this theme too literally! We’re looking for a concept here not a literal interpretation. The idea is to celebrate images that either literally or symbolically represent “Celebrating Family.”  So everything from a lit Menorah to packages under a Christmas tree to feet propped up in front of a fire to serving food in a soup kitchen or food pantry all speak to the concept “Celebrating Family.” And you’ll come up with many more ways to express the theme.

Entries are accepted this month through December 15, 2011 and voting begins on December 16 closing out on New Year’s Eve.  Enter your photo or photos and be sure your friends and family “Like” us on Facebook so they can easily vote for you when December 16 rolls around.  The top 20 voted photos will become finalists.

X-Rite Color Perfectionists Unite! Photo Contest | September Winner, October NEW Contest!

X-Rite Color Perfectionists Unite! Photo Contest | September Winner, October NEW Contest!

X-Rite’s Color Perfectionists Unite! Photo Contest is rolling along! The October contest theme is “Fall Color.” Entries are accepted through October 15, 2011.  Voting will begin on October 16. Remember the top 20 voted photos become the finalists that will be judged this month by Coloratti John Paul Caponigro. You can find this contest on Facebook by clicking “Contests” at X-Rite Photo on Facebook.

We have big news for you in this article.  We’re delighted to announce the WINNER of the September contest themed “Back to School.” This theme was designed to attract interesting representations of what that phrase brings up when we think about the coming fall season getting back to school work, sports, gatherings with classmates, etc.

While we had very interesting entries one has been chosen by our judge for this month Coloratti Jack Reznicki. That winner is called “Lovely Student” by Edwin Setiawan of Taiwan.  Edwin is a self taught photographer originally from Indonesia now living in Taiwan. He specializes in portrait photography and places a high value on composition and uniqueness of the image. Edwin’s goal is to incorporate 7 elements into his photography.  He strives for his photographs to be “beautiful, elegant, simple, artistic, lovely, natural and conceptual.”  I think you will agree that his winning photograph follows this recipe perfectly.

“There are many good things about this image composition-wise,” says Jack Reznicki. “It places the young girl in the right third of the image, it has repeating patterns in the background, it handles the mid-ground where the girl is very well and has the background out of focus enough to make the girl ‘pop’ in the mid-ground. The effect is giving the viewer a real sense of ‘place’.  The two darker trees in the right and left edge, makes you keep your eyes in the frame rather than wander out. The open shade lighting also makes the subjects skin clean and shadowless, which helps her stand out in the shot.” Jack goes on to say, “While it’s good to have all the technical aspects done well, and they are done very well in this shot, it doesn’t always make the photo. What really puts this photo as a winner is the expression of the girl as ready and confident, her expression aimed directly at the camera. Her off skewed tie and messy hair is the right touch of imperfection to feel like ‘Back to School’ and keeps the image from being to perfect, too antiseptic.”

Contragulations to Edwin Setiawan who will receive two great prizes from X-Rite as the winner of September Color Perfectionists Unite! Photo Contest. Edwin will receive i1Display Pro, one of X-Rite’s NEW display solutions, and ColorChecker Passport for great camera profiles.

Two other images caught Jack’s eye. One is called “Someday You’ll Come Here” by Kurt Faris.  Jack had some very interesting comments, “A great sense of place, good story, very good composition with leading lines on the right. The black and white is nice in that you look at the shapes and the elements rather than color.”

Jack also enjoyed “Back to School” by Sudiru Abdullah. Here’s what he said about that image, “A wonderful shot, a good captured moment. My eye tends to wander about in the image, not staying with the central character.  I really like the story it tells and the interesting expression on the lead boy’s face.”

Special thanks to Coloratti Jack Reznicki.  Check out his new book “Photographer’s Survival Guide,” his blog TheCopyrightZone.com and website www.Reznicki.com.
