“I just downloaded some ICC Printer Profiles from a manufacture’s site, now where should I put them?”
Ah! That’s a question I get pretty much every day!
After downloading the desired profiles make sure they have been uncompressed (or unstuffed or unzipped).
By far, the easiest way to install profiles in Windows XP is to right click on the profile in Windows Explorer and select “install profile”. Windows copies the profile to the correct directory automatically. Easy!
The complete path is XP Windows > System32 > Spool > Drivers > Color
On a Mac, storing the profiles in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles allows all users to use them. An alternative for users without Admin privileges, is:
Keep in mind that any profiles stored here are only available to the current user.
Not long ago, profiles were saved as .icm (for Windows) or .icc (for Mac). Now both Systems will understand the .icc format.
Always wondered about the meaning of those weird letters before each profile name? Click here to find out.
A final tip; if you install Printer Profiles while Photoshop is open, go to proof setup to reload the profile list, or you can simply restart the application. I am not sure if the “proof setup” trick works on Windows. Any feedback?
Sometime soon we will cover the proper steps to use ICC Printer Profiles from Photoshop CS4 and talk about creating custom profiles that are specific to YOUR printer.
