NEW X-Rite ColorMunki Display | Simply Amazing
by Brenda K. Hipsher – June 23rd, 2011
Today we’ll take a closer look at the new ColorMunki Display from X-Rite. The advanced hardware design is complete with a new optical system that features near perfect color matching.
First let’s take a look at the device itself. It stores in this position and this is also the position for taking and monitoring ambient light measurements.
By pulling up slightly on the diffuser the arm it rotates a full 180 degrees to expose the high-end optics housed in the device ready to be used for display or projector profiling. Note the soft face around the lens element that rests on the screen. The adjustable counterweight is permanently attached to the device, and because it’s integrated, it will never get lost or left behind. It’s easy to move along the cord simply by depressing the button and sliding it.
When profiling projectors the arm rotates to the middle position so that the diffuser becomes a platform on which the device rests and is adjusted to point directly toward the projector screen. And a built in threaded tripod mount gives you even more flexibility for projector profiling.
ColorMunki Display incorporates new technologically advanced filter and optical systems, fast measurement speed, and amazing color accuracy on all modern display technologies including LED & Wide Gamut LCDs. It’s also spectrally calibrated at the factory, which makes it field upgradeable to support future display technologies.
ColorMunki software has a wizard driven interface that makes using this new solution really easy for everyone. It includes two user modes, “Easy” and ”Advanced”, both designed to give high-level professional color results for your displays and projectors.
Both modes offer:
- Ambient Light Measurement – automatically determine the optimum display luminance for comparing prints to your display, based on a measurement of the lighting conditions where prints will be viewed.
- Intelligent Iterative Profiling, an adaptive technology that produces optimized results for maximum color accuracy on each unique display every time you profile
- Automatic Display Control (ADC) technology automates the adjustment of your display’s hardware (brightness/backlight, contrast, and color temperature) to speed up the profiling process and eliminate manual adjustments to ensure highest quality results.
In the advanced mode this device has the capacity to perform in two very important ways:
Ambient Light Smart Control – the intensity or amount of ambient light surrounding your workspace affects the way you perceive colors on your display. ColorMunki Display can compensate for this effect and provide the option to automatically adjust your profile or simply notify you as ambient light conditions change. You can leave this function active throughout the day and evening. You can set ColorMunki Display to ask you if you want the display changed based on the ambient light measurements taken at regular intervals.
Flare Correct™ measures and adjusts your display profile for reduced contrast ratios caused by flare light (or glare) falling on surface of display. By accurately measuring your effective display contrast ratio, you’ll have an even more accurate display profile. After the initial colors have been measured the software prompts you to move the device approximately 12 inches from the screen to measure the flare on the surface of your screen. This new innovation helps adapt your profile to account for glare or reflections that may be unavoidable on your monitor surface in your working environment.
ColorMunki Display offers everything you could possibly need to get you to a brilliantly-calibrated display or projector while helping you stay focused on doing what you love. For Color Perfectionists seeking simplicity, the ColorMunki Display will absolutely amaze you.
