The Photography Show 2015, Birmingham UK
by Dave Mobbs – April 14th, 2015
Every March, photographers from across the UK gather in Birmingham for a 4 day exhibition which sees over 35,000 people visit the show. The Photography Show is one of Europe’s largest annual imaging exhibitions and a great opportunity for us at X-Rite to meet so many existing and potential customers.
Importantly for us, it gives us the opportunity to do what we love doing, which is educating. We know that for photographers, an exhibition is an opportunity to learn, and with color management this is really important.
Some highlights for us at the show were:
Coloratti Master Adrian Weinbrecht was on the X-Rite stand on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd, running a number of sessions throughout the weekend. Adrian looked at two key photographic issues, firstly, lighting faces, and secondly the use of complementary colors for shooting portraits. Seeing Adrian present is always entertaining, but also very insightful, and Adrian’s attention to detail when capturing an image or the correct color is impressive.
On Saturday 21st Adrian also led a Photowalk in Birmingham. 17 photographers who had signed up previously had the opportunity to get further insight into the way Adrian uses natural light to create great images.
Coloratti Master Frank Doorhof – Having Frank present on stand is always an experience and he didn’t disappoint. With a series of funny, interactive and highly engaging presentations throughout Monday and Tuesday, Frank focused on providing tips and tricks for people looking to take your average portrait and turn it into a stunning shot. He also shared some great ideas on the use of props in a shoot which can really make a big difference to the end result.
Having X-Rite Coloratti Masters on stand is a great way to showcase the way leading professionals work with X-Rite color management solutions to create their images while also learning some brilliant photography tips along the way.
Adobe Creative Cloud Photo special offer
At the show, X-Rite announced a very special European offer, where anyone purchasing a ColorMunki Photo would also receive a one year subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud Photography. In addition, anyone purchasing the i1DisplayPro will receive a 15% discount off a one year Adobe Creative Cloud Photography subscription. As you can imagine this was a pretty popular promotion! You can find out more at http://www.xritephoto.eu/adobe
A photographic trip to Iceland
After launching this very special competition at Photokina in late 2014, it was exciting to give visitors at the show the very last chance to enter the competition which closed on the 31st March. We’ll be drawing the winner very soon, so keep an eye out as you could be in with a shot of winning that 8 day all inclusive photographic tour of Iceland.
X-Rite were delighted to be able to co-sponsor a fantastic prize bundle at the show. Together with some like-minded companies, we got together to give away a bundle of photographic equipment worth £1,500 to one lucky winner!
During the show, anyone who visited our friends at the SmugMug stand would have seen their web demonstrations in accurate color. That’s because we calibrated all the screens on the SmugMug stand with an X-Rite i1Display Pro to ensure perfect color, everytime.
It’s always great to meet photographers at an exhibition and talk through what they’re doing and the new exciting things they’re trying out with their cameras. While it’s been talked about for a while now, the number of people approaching us to discuss the amount of video they’re shooting with their cameras, and the developments around 4k was fascinating.
It was great to be able to reassure our customers that when capturing video, using the ColorChecker Passport is still the best way of ensuring accuracy, and when editing video, the X-Rite range of calibrators across the ColorMunki and i1 ranges are all able to calibrate screens to the standards needed for video and video programs.
Overall it was a great show and we’re looking forward to seeing you again next year.
