X-Rite Coloratti Photo of the Week – May 2018
by Dave Mobbs – May 30th, 2018
Here is a round-up of this month’s Coloratti Photos of the Week. In May, it was the turn of Einar Erlendsson, Martin Dörsch, Sanjay Jogia and Marianna Santoni. Read on if you want to find out more about this month’s images and try guess what all these images have in common (hint: ColorChecker Passport Photo).
Einar Erlendsson – Hallgrimskirkja Church
Based in Iceland, Einar Erlendsson is a lecturer, mentor, instructor and consultant in the field of digital image processes. Einar is the founder of FocusOnNature, an all-inclusive photography workshop program, based in Iceland, that collaborates with world-renowned instructors.
Einar recently captured one of Iceland’s most famous landmarks, the Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavik. For this shot, he used the Sony a7R II full frame camera with the Sony 4/70-200 G OSS lens.
“My aim was to capture the church whilst the sun was low over the horizon, creating a warm and romantic light against the blueish clouds” adds Einar. “I’ve started using X-Rite ColorChecker targets back in 1986, and I believe these tools are more important than ever before in today’s workflow”.
Martin Dörsch – Dariia Horst
Martin Dörsch is a talented software trainer, photographer and media designer, who also teaches photography and digital workflow at St. Pölten University in Austria.
What Martin is always looking to capture, in all of his images, is natural beauty. Same applies for this month’s featured image, called Dariia Horst. For this image, shot in Linz, Austria, Martin used the Sony Alpha 7mk2, an 85mm ZA lens and a Profoto B1 light.
“I always use the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo during each shot for white balance. This helps me when retouching or editing my images at a later date” said Martin. He also re-profiles both his camera and monitors every four months, to ensure that he can deliver work that stands out with accurate colors.
Sanjay Jogia – Alone Together
Coloratti Sanjay Jogia runs an award-winning, luxury destination wedding photography business, based in London. Professional Photographer Magazine has named Sanjay as one of the best 6 Best Wedding Photographers in the World.
He captured this stunning image using a Canon 1DX Mark II with 24-70 II L f/2.8. The setting was lit with two continuous lights: one inside the doorway to the right, and one outside for some subtle fill, both using half CTO gels.
“This was the last photo of a 16-hour wedding day and I wanted it to be symbolic. Finally, they were ‘alone together’ after a long, chaotic wedding day. I wanted to create a warm mood and portray the couple in an elegant scene with them in their wedding attire in the classic context of their venue” explains Sanjay.
Sanjay also faced the technical challenge of lighting the couple to match the warmth of the interior. He also had to color correct the overall scene in post to remove the unflattering hues. This was easily achieved by creating a camera profile in that specific environment using the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo.
Marianna Santoni – Particolare
Marianna Santoni is an Italian professional photographer and international post-production expert. Her team have been promoting and hosting training events specialising in art, photography, post-production and communication. Marianna’s photography work has been used in several editorial and advertising campaigns in national, European and American magazines.
The beautiful Girogia, the model for this shoot, resembles both Lady D and a Manga character. This eye-catching image was captured using the Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon EF 100mm F2.8 L IS UM Macro lens.
Marianna relied on the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Photo to ensure she captured accurate and consistent colors on the shoot. Marianna also uses the i1Studio to profile her camera, monitor and printer to ensure color accuracy throughout he workflow.
