by Alexandra Ilie – May 30th, 2019

We’ve all had that moment when we’re browsing through some photos online and the questions hit us. How did someone capture this photo? What gear did they use for this? What was their inspiration? How did they plan it?

These are some of the questions we try to answer in our monthly Coloratti Photo of the Week blog, where we tell the stories behind the month’s featured Coloratti images.  In May we shared some brilliant pictures taken by our Coloratti Joan Boira, Tim Grey, Don Komarechka on our Twitter and Facebook channels.

  1. Joan Boira – Cristina Casale

Coloratti Joan Boira is based in Barcelona where he opened a studio back in 1993. Joan’s work revolves around portrait and commercial photography, but he combines his love of photography with his love of teaching. That is why and he often organizes photography and editing courses in Spain.

This month’s featured image is a beautiful shot of pianist Cristina Casale by her grand piano. Cristina Casale is a professional pianist whose dedication and perseverance have brought her many international awards and has plaid in concerts all around Europe, the United States, South America and China.

The picture that Joan took of Cristina will be used as the front cover of her new album. If you’re a melomaniac, keep an eye out for Cristina’s new album!

  1. Tim Grey – woman selling souvenirs in Senegal

Tim shot this exquisite image at the Pink Lake” (Lake Retba) near Dakar, Senegal:

“ This woman was balancing a basket of souvenirs for sale on her head. The colors and textures caught my eye, in part because of the colors of the sand dunes and sky in the background…”

Tim used a Canon EOS 7D Mark II camera with a Tamron 18-400mm all-in-one lens. Focal length was of 265mm, a lens aperture of f/5.6, shutter speed of 1/3000th of a second, at 400 ISO. To ensure his colours are always accurate, Tim calibrates his screens using the X-Rite i1Display Pro.

When he’s not traveling the world, Tim can be found offering guidance on complex subjects through his writing, speaking, and training. His next events include several workshops all around the world. Next one is a field photography workshop in the remarkable Palouse farm country of Eastern Washington State in the U.S. He will then go to Salzburg and the nearby Alps in Austria. Lastly, Tim will host an incredible workshop in the “layered city” of Rome in Italy. More details about Tim’s workshops here: https://www.timgreyphoto.com/workshops
